Northwest Vintage Guitars brings you a rarity; a Ryoji Matsuoka leather labeled 1974 W300 D41 Style Dreadnaught. Yes, a R. Matsuoka Dreadnaught! It's hard to say what model, but we're calling it a W300 based on catalogs and known works. It features a solid Spruce top, intricate Abalone inlay, Semi Solid Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a killer Bound headstock with Rosewood overlay. She plays fairly well with no fret issues and low action. It's a great basis to be your next road dog, campfire axe, or project. Not to mention R. Matsuoka branded Dreads are like hen's teeth.
The nut measures 1.75" just like Martin. 1st fret depth is .95" and it grows to 1.07" at the 10th fret. It's a very vintage feeling soft V carve. There's some shrunk, cracked, and repaired binding along the fretboard. All the loose pieces have been shored up and it doesn't affect playability unless youre sensitive about that sort of thing. Action is low at 2.6mm on the low E and 1.6 on the high E. Saddle height is low as pictured, but there's room to install a taller saddle if desired. She does start to buzz up around the 10th fret if you lean into it but it plays fairly well overall. We're giving it a "good" rating reflecting that it's a structurally sound player as is, but there's room for improvement. Comes safely packed in the felt lined chipboard case in the photos.
