The Art and Canvas Series was comissioned to celebrate the first anniversary of their flagship store in Tokyo, Fender Japan has released the Made in Japan Art Canvas Hokusai series of Esquires. This special model features three masterpieces from Hokusai’s renowned series, Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji, on its body top. Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mt. Fuji is a series of landscape prints that have captivated art enthusiasts for centuries. Created during the Edo period, these prints depict various perspectives of Mt. Fuji, capturing its majestic presence amidst changing seasons and daily life. Hokusai’s work is celebrated for its intricate details, vibrant colors, and profound sense of tranquility. Fender’s decision to incorporate Hokusai’s art into their guitars is a tribute to Japan’s rich cultural heritage. It represents a fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern musical craftsmanship, creating a unique piece of art that is both visually stunning and musically exceptional.
In order to receive one of these beauties, we had to enter a lottery before June 25th, wait 3 months to get drawn, show up in person at the Fender Japan Flagship store, pay for the guitar, then wait 3 months for the artist to deliver. Then once again we had to pick up the guitar in Tokyo at the Fender Flagship store. Then we had to get it back to the states safely. It's a process.
The nut measures 1.64", neck depth is .85"-.90" at the 1st and 12th frets respectively. Fender says it's a D carve - it's real comfy. The neck is straight, the truss rod turns in both directions, and the relief is currently set for optimum playability. It's brand new. There are no marks, no wear, we didn't even demo it. It's new to us and unused. 8.7 lbs. Solid Ash body, Maple neck, Rosewood fretboard. It's got the 3 position Esquire wiring with tone bypass on 1, tone engaged on 2, and the dark circuit on 3. Very cool.
