Northwest Vintage Guitars brings you a groovy relic from 1966; a Vox V8161 Distortion Booster made in the USA by the Thomas Organ Company.  This is the version that plugs into a guitar, not the amp.  And it does work with a standard Telecaster recessed jack.

Vox USA announced the "Deluxe Distortion Booster" in their 1966 Catalog and touted the fact that is plugged into the guitar, not the amp like it's predecessors.  They also mentioned an adjustable volume, but it's actually more of a dry mix pot that doesn't have a huge effect on volume.  Duane Allman famously used a Vox V8161 on his 50's Tele in 1966-67.  It was attached with pieces of a broom handle and screwed into the guitar body.  You won't have to do that since this one stays in place just fine.  It's a great little unit and like most Fuzz type circuits of the day, they work great at lower volume on clean tones and will take your head off when cranked.

This one has been to the amp tech where the 1/4" male plus was replaced and the unit cleaned and inspected.  The loud "pop" when powering up is endemic to this unit.  The pot is a fuzz level, not volume and it's subtle, but there.
